What You’ll Be Doing

Reporting to the head of CIBC U.S. Middle Market Investment Banking, this position is responsible for providing dedicated proactive coverage of selected middle-market private equity firms which will result in generating transaction-based M&A and other CIBC revenue opportunities.

How You’ll Succeed

  • Primary focus is to build partner level relationships through regular proactive contact with investment teams at selected U.S. middle-market private equity firms. While focused on U.S. Middle Market Investment Banking, the role requires partnering with Bank USA, Capital Markets, private capital and Canadian Middle Market Investment Banking (“MMIB”) teams.

  • Private equity coverage activities include:

  • understand the portfolios of selected firms

  • understand the investment criteria for selected firms

  • actively contribute to buyers list creation

  • idea generation e.g. acquisitions, recaps, etc.

  • coordination with other CIBC groups as appropriate to help generate ideas, pitch and ultimately execute transactions (e.g. Capital Markets, Bank USA, etc.)

  • present market insights and ideas to private equity clients on a regular basis

  • maintain liaison role with clients on mandated transaction opportunities

  • participate in new business pitches

  • drive Salesforce adoption and reporting

  • Business development activities include:

  • support CIBC U.S. Middle Market Investment Banking in pitching new business opportunities

  • broaden idea generation to portfolio companies

  • actively promote the image of CIBC within the private equity sponsor community through participation and leadership in ACG, etc.

  • Ensure that recommendations and opinions offered to client are in compliance with CIBC policies and procedures

  • Demonstrate CIBC's values of Trust, Teamwork and Accountability

Provide leadership and effective management of business unit staff to influence employee commitment to the organization, to the team, and to their job by;

  • Setting appropriate context when assigning work to ensure that individuals’ roles support the achievement of the business unit’s priorities and CIBC’s overall goals;

  • Building team and individual capabilities by providing development opportunities such as job shadowing, special projects, and training;

  • Managing performance by providing fair and accurate formal and informal feedback, identifying and removing obstacles to performance and by explaining how performance expectations align with business priorities;

  • Creating a positive work environment and being an effective role model by championing CIBC’s mission, vision and values, and;

  • Ensuring compliance with policies, standards, guidelines and controls by applying the policies and controls fairly and consistently so employees understand what to expect,

Who You Are

  • Detailed knowledge of and experience in middle market M&A

  • Superior analytical and problem solving skills to independently generate ideas and provide solutions to clients

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills sufficient to provide detailed explanation and interpretation of factual and conceptual information and ideas

  • Excellent presentation skills evidenced by ability to be a focused, confident and persuasive presenter

  • Excellent influential skills sufficient to promote acceptance and implementation of recommendations

  • Minimum of 10 years related experience

  • Demonstrated ability to work well under pressure, adapt to a fluid environment and shift priorities in order to consistently meet tight deadlines and changing needs

  • Speaking up if witnessing behaviors that drive poor or unfair outcomes for clients, team members or other stakeholders

  • Escalating matters that can result in adverse market practices and outcomes, thereby negatively impacting CIBC’s reputation as a leading financial institution
