Job Overview:

The SBA Business Development Officer primary responsibilities will be that of developing new client and referral partner relationships while assisting clients with their strategic and daily relationship needs to deliver top-notch customer service. The incumbent will collaborate with the Sr. Commercial Credit Risk Group Manager (GPM), Portfolio Managers (PM), Client Specialists, Credit and Services teams to execute client requests in an efficient and effective manner. The SBA Business Development Officer collaborates with the SBA Banking Manager, Team Leads, and other RMs to increase new relationships of the Bank through a team approach. The SBA Business Development Officer will seek new client relationships and obtain greater penetration of existing relationships through active cross sale of credit and non-credit bank products, with the ultimate goal of profitable growth of strategic client relationships.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

The SBA Business Development Officer will be responsible for but not limited to the following activities:

  • The primary responsibility for this position will be that of developing new client and referral partner relationships to the bank and the introduction to cross sale partners and supporting portfolio management along with Portfolio Managers and Client Specialists.

  • Client Sales and On-going Relationship Management

  • Work to become a trusted advisor / strategic partner to each client through regular contact, value-added ideas and relationship building interactions.

  • Serve as the client’s primary contact/resource/advocate at the Bank for strategic and cross sell discussions.

  • Actively engage with key COI’s, brokers, and prospects in the applicable market to develop new relationships that generate leads and referrals for the Bank.

  • Actively develop referral relationships with other areas within the Bank, specifically Middle Market, Regional offices, Private Wealth, and Retail.

  • Leading strategic client reviews with Product partners to identify further opportunities with existing clients.

  • Maintain Salesforce pipeline and client / prospect records.

  • Identify product/service opportunities for other business units and participates in development of creative solutions to client needs, coordinates presentations, and brings in partners when appropriate.

  • Deepen banking relationships with new clients, broadening CIBC’s presence in applicable markets.

  • Non-credit approval authority up to approved limits

  • General understanding of current SBA Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), eligibility requirements, and SBA and Bank credit standards

  • Underwriting/Credit Approval

  • Drives new transactions by leading activities related to New Deals including preparation of the opportunity memo and discussions with PM’s, GPM, Team Lead and head of Business Banking

  • Responsible for the LP prior to submission for credit approval while providing direction to the PM team.

  • Non-credit approval authority up to approved limits

  • Client Onboarding/Closing

  • Lend strategic support to Client Specialists as well as the Credit and Services teams to execute client requests in an efficient and effective manner.

  • Collaborate with deal team on externally-facing closing activities as needed.

  • Client Portfolio Maintenance

  • Assists with any necessary reports for the various internal portfolio monitoring meetings (Watch asset Committee, 5-rated reviews, Criticized Asset Reports, etc.)

  • Work with the PMs to collect and review monthly and quarterly financial reporting and update in RM Central.

  • Risk Management

  • Understand the key parameters of the Bank’s Risk Appetite which will be of value as new credit opportunities are surfaced for the Bank’s Sr Mgmt. and Credit Risk Management teams to review.

  • Maintain regular dialogue with clients to assess any changes in financial performance and coordinate with PM III/IV to make recommendations as to changes in the Bank’s underlying risk ratings applied to each client.

CROSS-FUNCTIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

  • Maintain strong partnerships with other business functions/units (i.e., Private Wealth, Capital Market, Treasury Management and other cross-sell partners and Loan Services)

COMPLIANCE REQUIREMENTS/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • As a key contributor to the business unit, this job has the authority to recommend changes to business processes in order to enhance operational efficiency and effectiveness.

  • Speaking up if witnessing behaviors that drive poor or unfair outcomes for clients, team members or other stakeholders.

  • Escalating matters that can result in adverse market practices and outcomes, thereby negatively impacting CIBC’s reputation as a leading financial institution.

  • Continuing education for SBA SOP knowledge (ex. NAGGL, Local SBA Trainings, SBA Conferences, etc.)

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in Commercial Banking preferably with emphasis in SBA lending

  • Experience in underwriting, structuring, loan closing, documentation, and portfolio management.

  • Strong ability in loan structuring to effectively mitigate risk.

  • Maintain active in industry events to maintain current market knowledge and client relationships.

  • Completion of Commercial Banking Training Program or equivalent is desirable.
